S&W puts out a book to look up manufacture dates. No one would look it up for me because they paid for the book and I did not. On a more serious note, if you lube the barrel enough you should have no problem dating your gun. After WW II the serial # reads with barrel to the left (except for serial numbers on the fore strap thru 1957). Pre-War serial #s are centered on the butt unless there was a swivel.
